With an evolving global economy shaped by the changes in the social structure and societal demands over time, the public’s need for sport, leisure, tourism, and hospitality is becoming increasingly significant in today’s world. As a result, sport, and leisure services as well as the tourism industry are undergoing rapid developments. These services play a major role in the sustainable development of Taiwan’s economy.

The former Graduate Institute of Sport and Leisure Management set up its preparatory office in 1998 and was officially established in February, 1999, becoming the first sport and leisure management graduate institute to be founded in Taiwan. The very first student admission began in summer 1999, and the Continuing Education Master's Program was then put in place in 2002. Devoted to equipping students with expertise in related industries, Graduate Institute of Sport and Leisure Management provided its students with various courses, incorporating practicality into academic curriculum.

Graduate Institute of Hospitality Management, the other predecessor of SLHM, used to be under the Department of Human Development and Family Studies. In 2001, the master’s and doctoral programs for its Division of Nutrition and Hospitality were established. In 2005, the Division of Hospitality was set apart and renamed “Division of Hospitality Management and Education.” In August 2008, Graduate Institute of Hospitality Management and Education began its operations under the Department of Human Development and Family Studies. In summer 2010, the Graduate Institute was changed from the College of Education to the College of Management and was renamed “Graduate Institute of Hospitality Management” in the following year. Aiming at cultivating talents in the field of hospitality management, the graduate institute planned a comprehensive curriculum with practicality, theory, and research as the main emphasis.

To keep up with the current economic trends and university policy, the Graduate Institute of Sport and Leisure Management merged with the Graduate Institute of Hospitality Management in 2012 to form the Graduate Institute of Sport, Leisure and Hospitality Management (SLHM). By integrating the existing resources, hiring specialized faculty members, and designing diverse, international, and specialized curricula, the newly formed graduate institute aims to produce highly skilled professionals in the field of sport, leisure, and hospitality management. We expect to breathe new life into the sport, leisure, and hospitality industries in Taiwan.
